SOMETIMES THE MOVIES CAN LEAD YOU ASTRAY

In the classic Billy Wilder romantic comedy, Sabrina Fairchild, the chauffeur’s daughter, tells business hotshot Linus Larrabee that the first  time one sees Paris, it must  be raining, because Paris is at its most beautiful in the rain.  Well, maybe that is true if you are Audrey Hepburn and you are talking to Humphrey Bogart, but this morning, twenty minutes into my walk, it started to rain.  I turned right around and walked home for twenty minutes getting wet.  I could have used that umbrella Sabrina tells Linus he must not carry in Paris!

Did you try channeling Gene Kelly?

Professor Wolff --

Did you ever see the Woody Allen movie "Midnight in Paris"? It concludes with two characters happily walking the streets in the rain. Romantic, to be sure.

Not only did we see it, we saw it in Paris, in the movie theater that is featured in the opening montage of Paris scenes!! When that flashed on the screen, the audience erupted. The place where the antique taxi picks the main character up each night for his adventures is up the street from Place Maubert, where our apartment is.

One of the more poignant moments in my life occurred when I listened to prisoners with life sentences describe watching the rain fall from inside their cells and wishing how much they wanted to simply feel it on their skin. Ever since that moment, I have never really been bothered by the rain. As is so often the case, it tends to be the little things in life that exert the greatest impact.
