I was under the impression that southern Christians regardless of denomination have always been making it up as they go along - a "literal" or "straightforward" reading of the bible basically meaning ignoring centuries of theological discussion concerning the relevant passages that they like to pluck out to justify whatever so happens to be on their mind. Or is this not what you are referring to?
