THERE'S SPAM, AND THEN THERE'S SPAM

Spam is one of the familiar facts of modern life, like dog droppings on sidewalks -- not a big deal, but to be avoided if at all possible.  [Does anyone much younger than I even remember that Spam was originally processed ground up meat in cans?]  I have a pretty good spam filter on my email account which filters out all the messages offering cheapie mortgages and penile enlargements and cut-rate drugs and such -- about five or six pages every couple of days.  For some reason, the filter thinks that ads in French from Concerts Classiques are spam while ads for big box items from Darty are not.

But every so often one slips through.  Usually, it is a message that begins "My Dear" and promises either marital bliss or untold wealth -- from someone in Croatia or Nigeria or Belarus.  This morning, the following message popped up in my In Box.  Because it was in French, I took the time to read it.  What charmed me was the specificity of the amount of money awaiting me -- no rounded figures here.

This is the entire message.  I shall leave it untranslated:

A bientôt"
What I love about this scam is that it costs nothing at all to send it to ten million people, and it only takes one sucker.  Do you suppose I can really bag 45% of "deux million trois cent onze mille Euro"?  Let's see, that would be about 1.4 million bucks at current exchange rates.  Almost enough to buy the big beautiful apartment across the courtyard from my tiny pied-a-terre in Paris.  Hmmm.

I'll admit that I used to love a good fried spam sandwich, though I haven't tried one in years. Maybe I'll give it a try soon.
