BRIEF REPLY TO MURFMENSCH

The UNC Chapel Hill department of Public Policy requires all of its first and second year doctoral students to take a seminar, taught every second year, on "Normative Dimensions of Public Policy." I am currently teaching the seminar, as a visitor. I will lecture for six weeks on some foundational materials in ethics and social and political philosophy [Bentham, Mill, Rousseau, Oakeshott, Rawls], after which the students, in pairs, will make seminar presentations and lead discussions on the normative dimensions of the particular problems of public policy they have chosen, with readings they will assign. I have just had the first, organizational, meeting, so I do not yet know what topics the students will choose for their presentations, but I can tell you that they are a very interesting group of students with an extraordinarily wide background in hands-on public policy issues both in the United States and in Africa.

First Marx post later this morning.
