J'ARRIVE

After a long flight from Atlanta, and some rather bad food courtesy of AirFrance, we are here at our pied a terre in Paris. The big news here is that the streets are filled with piled up garbage -- there is a strike on, of course. I have no idea what that is all about.

On the flight over, I spent some time reading LIBERATION, the newspaper of the Socialist Party. There was a long story about Marine le Pen, the new leader of the far right Nationalist Party [and daughter of its founder.] This is the new face of fascism in France, and very disturbing. I shall try to say something about it in the next day or two.

  1. It's a strike of the agents municipaux of the city against reforms of wages and retirement laws. See there.

National newspapers do not seem to mention it.

  2. Thank you. That makes sense. So it is, in a sense, fallout from the attempt by Sarkozy to revise these agreements nationally.
