UPDATE FROM THE HOT STOVE LEAGUE

GT, Marco Rubio has just stated unequivocally that there is no way he will be on the 2012 Republican ticket in either slot. The rules both of American politics and of Hot Stove League speculation make it quite clear that you need not give that any credence at all, especially since, at this point, it does not really appear as though anyone will be on the 2012 ticket! Furthermore, Obama has played Donald Trump like a fifty dollar violin, with the result that he is now -- to change metaphors -- toast. Tim Pawlenty, anyone?

    One of my dad's favorite one-liners, when Lyndon Johnson backed out of the '68 race: "If drafted, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve."

    He'd float that over someone's head, sit back with a smirk, and wait for the semantics to sink in.
