OFF TO DC
Tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn I will fly up to Washington to see my sister and my son, Tobias, who is coming down from Philly for the day. When I return, I will launch a new mini-tutorial, this time on Max Weber's classic monograph, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. I checked, and sure enough, the text is online, if anyone would like to read it along with my mini-tutorial. I strongly recommend doing so. The work is one of the great classic texts of Sociology [before that discipline lost its way in a maze of superficial opinion surveys.]

Hi Prof. Woolf,
I'd be very much interested if you'd dedicate a post to expanding a bit on that last comment about the state of the discipline of sociology; it's intriguing.
OK. Maybe not 'til I get back from DC, but I will say something. It might be worth a lengthy post, not just some snarky comments.
I just thought I'd mention two sociologists who are an exception to the rule you mention:
Loic Wacquant
http://loicwacquant.net/
and
Michael Dawson

If you don't already know their work, it might be something of a pleasure to know about it...
Best Wishes,
MarkL
