I shall try to return later today with some thoughts I have been [rather feverishly] turning over in my mind about the historical roots and meaning of the powerful sense of resentment and grievance on the right, and the reasons for their obsessive hatred of Obama.
What did you think about the obsessive hatred of the left for Bush?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the hatred of Bush by the Left had the same psychodynamic quality at all. There was a good deal of contempt [justified, in my judgment] for his lack of merit, but remember that the real fury was fueled by the appalling outcome of the 2000 election, in which Gore received half a million more votes and then was robbed of the presidency by Antonin Scalia and his co-conspirators on the Supreme Court. That court decision was so nakedly appalling that it curdled whatever belief we might have retained in the rule of law.
