This morning, I stumbled on the blog maintained by retired University of Manchester professor Norman Geras. I do not agree with him in all things [he was a supporter of the war on Iraq, for example], but he writes with wit and verve, virtues all too often absent from the web. Here is the link:

Professor, there is a Marxist economist who I have become intrigued with. Although I have no idea if the gentleman is related to you, he is also a Professor Wolff. Any comments on his economic theories? This link provides his latest "economic update" that is regularly featured on the blog. He does seem to have a fairly consistent following. Perhaps he has a rather large ego, his site suggests so, but I don't necessarily find that as a fault. You can also find his profile on Wikipedia (link below the first one to his site).

I assume that is Rick [Richard] Wolff, who was in the Economics Department at UMass during the time that I was there. We knew one another, of course, and I think of him as a friend, though I have not seen him in some time. I tell some stories about Rick in my Autobiography. He and his colleague, Steve Resnick, have created a flourishing school of Marxian thought, with a journal, doctoral students, an annual conference, and many publications.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you in recent years he does not come across as a Marxist or a member of the left, although he still claims to be both. For instance, he wrote that if he could meet anyone in the world, and a share a dinner with them, it would be Henry Kissinger. Oh well...
Sigh. I have met Kissinger, and he is one of the last people with whom I would want to share even a cup of coffee!
