A FLOOD OF COMMENTS
After all the examples folks have cited of honors turned down, I am beginning to think accepting an honor is the counter-cultural thing to do! It gives one hope for the human race.
Thank you for an always-insightful blog. I have enjoyed reading it for several years now.
I wanted to let you know of a case where someone did indeed accept a controversial award: Haruki Murakami and the Jerusalem Prize in 2009. Here is a link to the short acceptance speech he gave; I am interested in what you think about his decision to accept.
