I have suddenly begun receiving dozens of messages from FaceBook informing me that a post has tagged me [do I have that right?] I think this flurry was triggered by my scandalous comments about Israel, but the "messages" in the e-mails are a string of question marks, because my e-mail provider does not recognize Hebrew letters. When I go to FaceBook [which I virtually never frequent] and click on the "translate" utility, somewhat garbled references to Post-Modernism come back, but that has nothing to do with what I wrote.
The foolish residents of the town of Babel have a lot to answer for.
i had a look. it's not about your recent israel remarks. it's an essay by david pilavin, who says he corresponded with you a few years ago, about political dissonance. you are used as an illustration of a radical leftist whose cultural tastes and practices (liking baroque music, preferring kant to modern philosophy, travelling to paris, disparaging rednecks etc.) would seem to mark him as a republican. he says that in his correspondence with you, he suggested you were an elitist for being dismissive of non-elite universities, and you declared that you are an open and avowed elitist.
ReplyDeletei didn't read all the way to the end, but that's what it starts out about, at any rate. the title is "an upside-down world i saw; on dissonances right and left." there are dozens of comments, which is probably why you got many notifications.
