Susie and I did not watch the Republican candidate debate last night, but I did see more than enough TV coverage this morning, and a good deal was made of the bromance between Trump and Cruz. [Forgive the vulgar choice of terms. I feel that my level of my discourse should match the moral level of the object under discussion.] It is clear enough why Cruz has been cozying up to Trump. His long-term strategy is to follow Trump, "drafting" as they say at Daytona Beach, and hope that he can scarf up Trump's supporters, should the nascent fascist falter. But why would Trump return the hugs?
One thought: If Trump is half as smart as he says he is, which is to say twice as smart as anyone else, it will have occurred to him that although he may do spectacularly well in the primaries and caucuses, he is likely to fall short of the 1243 delegates he needs for the nomination. Now that Cruz is coming on strong and looks to overtake Rubio as the runner-up in delegate count, he may have a good chance at winning three or four hundred delegates. That would enable Trump to offer Cruz the Vice-Presidential slot in exchange for those delegates, and together, Trump and Cruz would control the Convention regardless of what the so-called Republican Establishment tries.
So tuck this away in your memory, and trot it out in late April, should Trump be cruising and Cruz be trumping Rubio.
