A while back, I discovered that I had somehow acquired Amazon Prime, which gives me access to Netflix-style original movies and series. In late December, I stumbled on Mozart in the Jungle, and quickly binge-watched on my computer all ten half-hour episodes. What was not to love? Classical music, sex, and afternoon Soap style plotting. At the end of the last episode was a message that Season Two would be available on December 30th.
Well, I have just finished watching episode 10 of Season Two, and now I suddenly realize that I shall have to wait roughly 360 days for Season Three! That does not seem fair at all.

I was a big fan of A Song of Ice and Fire way before HBO came out with its mini-series, and I was hooked since I first read A Game of Thrones. Fans like me had to wait years for the next two sequels to come out in print. However, there was a way to get A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords before they were available in the U.S. and that was via Amazon.com UK through cheaply printed trade paperbacks. I was let down greatly by A Feast of Crows, never finished that book, and I never finished reading another book of A Song of Ice and Fire since. It's not fair that the HBO television series (which I never saw) heralded the death of such a brilliant series of prose genius--and yes I blame the fortune making mini-series for corrupting its author's writings. Then again--to be fair--there were other magnum opus's whose fourth book in the series failed to live up to their past: like Isaac Asimov's: Foundation Edge and Robert Jordan's: The Shadow Rising--and those writers had no fortune making motion pictures to corrupt their story telling when those books were being written.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the mini-series came out in 2011 and A Feast... in 2005. I guess I was just two facts the poorer in my previous post. However, I remember Martin saying something to the effect (in 2004) that A Feast for Crows was such a large work that it had to be divided into two books. The latter being A Dance with Dragons which first came out in 2012. I've read a little of A Dance with Dragons and I can say that the first three books of the series are still the best.
ReplyDeleteOn a completely unrelated topic, I hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful pairing of the crescent moon and Venus on your morning walks. It is colder where I am (-11 C this morning) and the combination of the cold and the first light and the moon and Venus--huge and almost dripping out of the sky--always makes me feel like I am witnessing the beginning of time.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy it as I walked in the 24 degree F. weather. I went out at five am, when the moon and Venus wer e high in the sky. Even with the very great deal of ambient light where I live they were brilliant.
