CALLING ALL TECHIES

I want to install the Uber app on my IPhone.  When I go to the app store and call it up and hit download, I get a message that since this is more than 100 megabytes, it won't download until I am connected to WiFi.  But I thought I was connected to WiFi.   Any suggestions?

    If your i-Phone's Wi-Fi connectivity feature is enabled and you are connected to a wireless network, the Wi-Fi indicator should be displayed on the upper left hand corner of your iPhone screen. The Wi-Fi indicator resembles a vortex made up of different tiers. The tiers may be highlighted or greyed-out depending on the strength of the wireless connection. If the vortex is missing, you are probably connected to your provider's cellular network (e.g. Verizon's 4G LTE or 3G cell network) and your phone will indicate this.

    If the vortex is missing, open the "Settings" application on your iPhone; the "Settings" application is identified by an icon that resembles a cross-section of an annulus containing a couple of gears. Under "Settings", you should see the "Wi-Fi" category. There should be a notification to the right of "Wi-Fi" which could be in three possible states:

    1. The Wi-Fi feature is "Off"

    2. The Wi-Fi is "Not Connected" to a wireless network.

    3. The Wi-Fi is enabled and connected so the notification should display the name of the Wi-Fi network to which your phone is connected.

    In the case of number 1 above, enable wireless connectivity by tapping on the "Wi-Fi" category and moving the greyed-out slider to the right. The slider should turn green and your phone will start discovering wireless networks in your vicinity. Choose your wireless network and enter your passcode to access it.

    In case of number 2, tap on the "Wi-Fi" category. A list of wireless networks in your vicinity should be displayed. Again, choose the wireless network that you would like to connect to and enter your passcode to access it.

    In case of number 3, it may be that your wireless connection is weak or intermittent. I would suggest you move closer to your wireless router or somewhere in your home where you can achieve a strong wireless connection (indicated by all of the tiers of the Wi-Fi vortex indicator being highlighted).

    I hope these instructions are fairly clear and I haven't muddied the waters further.

  4. Dear Prof,
    Please take a break from saving the world from Trump to research the business model of Uber (putting "uber criticism" into the search engine of your choice should do it). Then maybe reconsider your choice of transport. Or not. I have trouble with the picture that you may think it's a perfectly nice and convenient way to get from A to B, drivers be damned...

  5. Lyft is generally regarded to treat its staff better. However, the criticism is most powerful at an institutional level, and Lyft are also culpable in this regard. My limited experience with Uber drivers was that they were perfectly happy in their jobs. Just be sure to give your driver a 5-star rating unless you want them off the road. An average across users of less than 4.7 or so renders them unable to work with the company.

    Basically, both Uber and Lyft are extremely cheap, and you know who's going to be bearing the cost of that. Just be sure to tip kindly. :)

  6. Does Uber pay taxes? Do Uber drivers? Does Uber make it easy or hard for states to tax Uber drivers? My impression is that the answer to these questions is a no.

    Given your political views, I would reconsider.
