MORE TECH GUIDANCE

How do I create an easy to manage list of everybody who wants to be part of this effort, with a place for name, address, phone number, email address -- something that people can sign into without my having to copy each bit of data by hand?  The idea is first to recruit people and then have them group themselves by where they live, so that they can work in their localities for progressive candidates at every level.  This ideally ought to be something they can just sign into.  And of course it must be capable of generating a distribution list.  Or is this something one does with some other social media platform?

This can only work if it is a cooperative effort.  So far I have heard from two people, one of whom lives in Chile.  Anyone else?

  2. Professor ... Take a look at bigtent.com. It may provide a free and simple starting point for the effort you have outlined. The site allows you to create a group, collect and manage membership information, set privacy settings, set a calendar, and use discussion forums. Best I can tell most of the features are free. I am in no way affiliated with the company but know folks who use it to manage local boy scout troops and sports groups.

  3. Bob, there's nothing like having a real person at your side, directing the tech effort, rather than us suggesting helpful sites to slog your way through. There must be ways to find a progressive, motivated, technically savvy person at UNC. If we had to pay him or her, we could all throw some money in the hat. (Progressives have always been good at that, back in the day when we threw actual money into actual hats. This person could hook the org. up to PayPal.) But I think the effort will take an actual, flesh and blood techie.

  5. An easy way might be for you to set up a Gmail account (it takes 3 minutes) and have everyone who is interested send you an email with their relevant personal data. With Gmail it's easy to send a group email to everyone on your list of contacts, etc.

  6. If you're phobic about stuff like setting up a Gmail account, I can do one in your name and you can change the password.
