TRYING NOT TO DRIVE THEM AWAY
Tomorrow's lecture will be a mad dash through Classical Political Economy, complete with equations. If this does not drive away the masses, then they are hooked. I guess I am a total nerd -- this is the stuff I like the best. It is remarkably interesting, especially the Ricardo. One of the things I have always liked about Marx is his genuine respect for Smith and Ricardo, whom he recognized as having first rate minds. Would that modern neo-classicals exhibited a similar classiness.
Who is in the room for these lectures? undergrads, grad students, just interested people who've walked in? a mixture?
ReplyDeleteIf I see an equation, my mind goes blank, but although I'm sure that I'm not going to able to follow your math and will not even try, I'll tune in again when you return to Marx the social critic.
ReplyDeleteI guess that I'm not a nerd (the word was not in use when I was in school). What's the word for a very bookish person who is allergic to math and to science and knows nothing about computers?
I was a mathematics major as an undergraduate, so I'm not going to be fazed by a few equations.
ReplyDeleteCoincidentally, I've got some Adam Smith-related spring reading lined up. I recently received Dennis C. Rasmussen's book The Infidel and the Professor, which is about the friendship between Hume and Smith, and also Eric Schliesser's book Adam Smith - Systematic Philosopher and Public Thinker. Those should keep me busy for a while.
