I am back now from a long day of door to door canvassing in
Sanford, NC, at the very southern part of the 6th NC Congressional
District. What with driving there and
back, it was almost six hours of grunt political work. I hope it made some difference. Once again, I was reminded of the difference
between theorizing about politics and actually engaging in it.
And so to bed, to quote Samuel Pepys.
What are the prospects? Do you feel that the canvassers are making a dent? Any relevant polling?
ReplyDeleteNo relevant polling, although there are 60,000 more registered Democrats than registered Republicans in the 6th CD, even though Walker has won both times by 18 points! The problem is getting people to bother to vote. Canvassing is always really depressing. Many times no one answers the door, sometimes the person on your list has moved, etc. But experience seems to show that the total number of door knocks, the number of phone calls, really does make a difference. It is massively and wastefully labor intensive, which is to say, it is politics, not philosophy. And a distinguished senior professor with a vita as long as your arm is no more useful than a young kid out for a lark or a housewife moved by the Kavanaugh hearings. In short, it is just exactly what a leftwing populist thinks politics should be.
