DEAR GOD!

The appalling Governor Northam of Virginia referred to the African captives brought to Virginia in 1619 as "indentured servants."

  1. How can it be any more pathetic! The Gov who posed in blackface and seeks redemption for his sins, demonstrates he needs a lot more penance before his sins are forgiven. The ignorance of the 24 year old has not been tempered by knowledge or understanding in the intervening 25 or so years. The bar for unfitness to hold office has been set so low these days, but he he's has sailed under it.

  2. For what it's worth, it's at least arguably accurate that Africans brought to Virginia in 1619 were indentured servants and not strictly slaves, with real slavery starting somewhat later. See the relevant section here:

Is this what he was referring to? I don't know, but maybe. No doubt this isn't the best way to frame the issue, but it is also, it seems, not completely inaccurate.

  3. No, that is not accurate. Chattel slavery developed in the 18th century [see Thomas Morgan, AMERICAN FREEDOM, AMERICAN SLAVERY or chapter three of my book, AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-WHITE MAN.] Indentured servants were legally free men and women who were bound to a term of service, typically seven years, after which they were free. The African captives brought to Virginia were not bound to a specified term of service.

  4. Oddly, Northam, according to this poll, has stronger support among African Americans than among whites:

  5. Mr. Palmeter,
No so odd, actually. In recent history African Americans have voted approx 90% democratic in presidential elections. Typical republican positions include; ending affirmative action; the voting rights act has been gutted by the Roberts court on the assumption that racism doesn't exist anymore; they are pushing a "religious liberty" theory that would undermine the public accommodations act which guarantees that stores, etc. can not refuse to serve Blacks; and they have introduced measures designed to reduce Black voter participation. When Trump called Rep. Barbara Lee 'low I.Q.' there was no outcry from the republican party. Rather than odd, it seems completely reasonable African Americans would prefers Democrats.

  6. I think you mean Edmund Morgan, American Slavery, American Freedom. Funny, I was just thinking a couple days ago that I need to reread that book.
