LGA BLUES

Tuesday, after my class, I spent an hour with a student.  Then, at 5 p.m., I caught the M60 bus at Broadway and 116th street for LaGuardia.  I got home and into my apartment at 12:15 that night.  Just another seven hour trip courtesy of LaGuardia and its endless delays.  I love the teaching but the commute may kill me!

  1. Flying is tiring and extremely uncomfortable. Remember back in the 60's when airlines pampered passengers, even passengers in economy class and when flying was "glamorous"?

  2. Interesting interview with Bhaskar Sunkara, author of a new book, The Socialist Manifesto.
Fairly recent (May of this year). Talks a lot about Bernie, etc.

  3. The M60 bus down 125th st and to/from Laguardia was one of my least favorite things when I lived in NY City. I'm told that it might have improved since when I lived there, but at the time, it was slow, packed full of people with lots of luggage, and hard to get off and on. (And, as is typical of NYC - people would refuse to move back to let others on.) After a couple of times taking it to the airport, I just decided to splurge and get a car there when I needed to get to Laguardia. (I did take that bus to get to a car rental place a few other times, but at least didn't have luggage then.) I'm pretty sure those were the only times I took a car or car service when I lived in NY. (I lived pretty close to the M60 - about 8 blocks further north in Harlem, so it was especially frustrating that it was such an unpleasant experience. Of course, Laguardia being at the end of the trip didn't really make it better!)

  4. I get on at Bway and 116th, when it is almost empty. I get a seat, plug my charger cord into an outlet to charge my cellphone, hunker down as the bus fills up, and watch the world go by. A cab costs more than $50, the bus is $2.75, and since they take essentially the same route, the bus is about as fast.
