CALLING ALL TECHIES

Nothing is ever easy in cyberworld.  It seems there is a way to livestream a lecture on YouTube and then post it there permanently, but I cannot figure out how to do that.  I need a YouTube account, which I apparently have, but then what do I do?  This does not allow for interaction, as zoom, does, so I am not sure I want to do it, but I would like to know how.

Anybody really know?  Can you explain it so that your grandfather can understand?

  1. Here is a place to start - one thing you apparently need to do first is to 'verify' your YouTube account, which you may not have done yet:

  2. Assuming you already know what livestreaming means, there are two ways of doing it on Youtube. One is from your computer using a webcam, the other from your mobile phone. Both have separate instructions here:

Once you setup, this is an overview:
    - open youtube page in your browser
    - click "go live"
    - select "webcam" (to start livestreaming)
    - click "End Stream" (to end the livestreaming session)
    - click "Save"

Streamed sessions will be saved to your youtube account automatically. There are many other tweaks and settings under options and preferences that you can explore.

You may want to test a few short videos to familiarize yourself before the actual live stream. Good luck.

  3. There are two options for live-streaming on Youtube. First, you can use a streaming software such as Streamlabs OBS; this allows you to configure a lot of things and let your streaming looks like the ones you can see on TV. Alternatively, you can directly streaming using the webcam on your laptop (I recommend this since it is relatively simple): just log into your account, verify it, and then, click on the icon at the upper right corner of your YouTube homepage. It will take you to your account menu, and I think you need to do something there to enable your life streaming (can't remember the detail since I have done this some years ago). After you are done with all these, there will be a video icon that is right next to your account icon on the upper right corner of youtube webpage, and click that, choose "go live", and the rest should be self-explanatory.

  4. Professor,

If you go to your Youtube main page and look at the top right hand corner of the screen, you will see a camera-shaped icon with a plus sign in the middle (that is the icon for creating a new Youtube video).

Click on that icon, and you will see two options: upload a video, or go live. Try going live.

Youtube will ask you to verify your account. You do that by giving your phone number, and getting a verification code texted to your phone. Then enter the verification code.

Then you have to wait 24 hours for Youtube to verify your account.

Apparently, you can Zoom your class and have it go live on Youtube at the same time.

    Some other recommendations:
    (1) To avoid "Zoombombing" and other security issues, you should use Whatsapp to share the meeting ID and password. You can get a Hume class chatroom on Whatsapp, and share the Zoom meeting ID there. Whatsapp has end-to-end encryption, so that minimizes the risk of the meeting ID leaking out.
    (2) Only people with fast internet connection should join the Zoom meeting. Anyone with a slow connection (like myself, connecting from India) will degrade the connection quality for the entire group. But those of us with slow connection can watch the class live on Youtube.
    (3) You can also check with the tech-person on how to Zoom and go live on Youtube at the same time, and to record the live Youtube video for posterity. (I am trying to get this done for my Dad, so I can get back to you on how to do this in a day or two, but I'm sure somebody else has the answer as well.)

  5. Oh, and if you don't have more than 1000 subscribers on your account, you should use your desktop computer browser rather than your smartphone Youtube app to do a live video.
