YES! YES!! YES!!!
I stayed up five hours past my usual bedtime until it was clear that the Democrats would win both Senate seats in Georgia. God bless Stacy Abrams. There will be more than enough time in the next two years to complain bitterly about everything that the Democrats fail to do, but this morning is for celebration.

It's too bad there has been a lack of security in the U.S. Capitol. People's lives are at stake here: including elected officials, security agents, and protestors.
These recent events in the USA have truly turned out to be a:
"Grand contested election for the Presidency of the United States." --Herman Melville (1851)
I hope there turns out a peaceful resolution from today's events...
There will be a resolution. Business will continue. The republic will survive for a while, in some form. But there will *never* be a resolution between me and the friends who sat on their hands in 2016, their clean hands; who let this happen in the first place. The crackpots and fanatics, could and should have been ignored. But the people of good sense, whose hands were too clean .... To paraphrase Victor Klemperer, the fools and even the knaves many of whom did not know the difference, I can let them go, but those [who knew better then], *they* should hang high from the lampposts as long as is compatible with public hygiene!

I voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and I did so in Maryland -- a state where my vote for Clinton was completely unneeded, since there was never any question that she was going to carry the state handily, which of course she did.
With that said, I think that your comparison of the people who sat out 2016 in Wisconsin or Michigan or other close states to those in pre-1933 Germany who failed to oppose Hitler is somewhat over the top. Trump is, as C. Mulvaney has mentioned here more than once, likely a malignant narcissist, he obviously has no respect whatever for the democratic process, but he is a demagogue in the tradition of, say, George Wallace or Huey Long (from a different ideological standpoint) or whoever. But Trump is not Hitler. Comparisons of the sort you are drawing just strike me as rather ahistorical. (Your mileage, obviously, may vary, but that is my view.)
Well, you're right. The Klemperer quote is over-the-top. Mattis and his crew will clean the carpet with these scum if it comes to it. The same might have been true of the Prussian officer-corps -- they had ample time and opportunity through the late thirties; but they were conflicted in their hearts. The dishonor of giving fealty to the shabby Bavarian postcard painter was offset by their interest the license they'd get to show the French a thing-or-two. But the comment about the unclean leverage exerted by the "clean-hands crew" in 2016 is, I am afraid accurate. I can only speak directly of Michigan, which is the only place I had boots on the ground and encountered those nauseating arguments.
