Meanwhile, I am getting an enormous kick out of reading the accounts of the Strauss-Kahn affair in Liberation. Even though Liberation is a socialist newspaper, they know a good story when they see one, and each day eight or ten reporters write columns on every conceivable aspect of the sad tale. My favorite this morning was a little sidebar about Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. It seems that this is a popular "procedural" on French television [suitably dubbed, of course], and the handing over of Strauss-Kahn to the real Special Victims Unit was too good to pass over. I have not read such purple prose since the Clinton-Monica Lewinsky thing. It is doing wonders for my French.

BEEP BEEP
Well, I feel like the coyote in the old Road Runner animated cartoons. Every so often, you will recall, he dashes off the edge of a cliff and manages to stay aloft for ten or fifteen feet before he notices that there is nothing holding him up. Then he plummets to earth. I have been motoring on, writing Part after Part of my Freud tutorial, but the only time anyone seems to take notice is when I break away for a moment to fire up the Hot Stove League. Oh well, I shall soldier on until I am finished [another four or five Parts, I estimate], and then I shall post the entire thing on box.net. After that, who knows?
I've been keeping my comments to the political stuff, but I'm finding the Freud posts extremely valuable. Since you blocked the one possible objection I might have had by emphasizing the scientific, hypothetical character of Freud's theories, I've been content to absorb the information.
ReplyDeleteGood show. That is exactly the way I would hope people would view what I a saying.
ReplyDeleteThe Freud posts are very interesting and I have been waiting for someone to write something like what you have been dong. Thank you for your hard work.
ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying the Freud series tremendously. Remember that a lack of comments could mean that no-one's paying attention, but it could also mean that the arguments you've offered are so devastating that you've rendered your entire readership awestruck and speechless.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though, don't read too much into a lack of comments. Your readership at this blog seems generally to be people who don't speak up unless they've got something worthwhile to say. And if a reader knows nothing substantive about Freud, and your account doesn't have any internal inconsistencies, then they can be learning a lot without having the impulse to say anything.
I, too, have been reading and learning from the Freud series. I just haven't been moved to comment.
ReplyDeleteI too have been absorbed in the information and completely grateful for your hard work..just a bit behind and trying to keep up! Thank you. Enjoying the food and politics as well!
ReplyDeleteJust to echo the above: I've found the series fascinating.
