SO MANY WOMEN, SO LITTLE TIME

Everyone is twittering and tweeting about Rick Perry's inability in last night's debate to remember which three government agencies he would terminate if he were elected president, but to my mind, the high point of the debate was Herman Cain's proud boast that for every woman who has accused him of harassment there are thousands who have not. He is right, of course. If those five women were part of a large random sample, then statistically speaking, the number of women who say he harassed or assaulted them would fall within the margin of error of zero, so I suppose he figures that he is, scientifically speaking, innocent. It is nice to have a presidential candidate who understands these arcana.

Meanwhile, we might respond by pointing out that for every person who is not taking part in the Occupy Wall Street movement, there are thousands who are. Even here in quiet, sleepy, progressive Chapel Hill, an OWS movement has taken hold and is settling in for the long haul.
