I left thirty-seven years in a reliably blue state, on a campus where even the stodgy conservatives were left-wing Democrats, to move to North Carolina, a red state trending purple, for the promise of hot summers and manageable winters which Susie would be able to navigate with her MS.
What I got was a purple state trending deep red, and this morning, SNOW.

I was in Paris a few days ago. I checked out your street and met the guys at Hug and You. Wonderful neighborhood. The many little restaurants humming along. Some drizzle but no snow.
It's gone now.
Ah, it makes me long for Paris. Not until March, during the UNC spring break [I shall take a batch of midterm essays with me and grade them in the cafe.] Some years ago, I sat in a cafe in Place de la Bastille and wrote longhand my essay "The Future of Socialism." In march, I am taking a big step forward. I shall cook cuisses de canards for two friends and we shall actually have dinner guests in our tiny apartment. 330 square feet!
