Please, get fully on board with Bernie already. Warren’s plans, for al the hype, are appreciably worse, and her conception of politics is technocratic rather than class warfare - movement centered. The fact that a self-averred Marxist is openly singing the praises of a candidate who never gives up a chance to praise capitalism and put down socialism—and when an actual socialist is in the race and has a real shot—is disturbing.
I don't think that there's any rule which says that when making political decisions, a Marxist cannot take other criteria into account besides class struggle. Besides being a Marxist, Professor Wolff is concerned about the environment, about gender issues, about gay rights, about the education of young people, about literally scores of other issues and I imagine, having followed his blog every day for 4 years now, that he takes all those factors into consideration before supporting a candidate.
Marxism is a method of social analysis, which can be combined with other methods of analysis, not a monotheistic religion.
As Bob has said many times now, politics is ultimately about where you stand in ‘which side are you on?’ moments. Now is one of those moments. There is a bona fide socialist with a bona fide chance running for the nomination—and, by the way Wallerstein, Bernie is significantly better than Warren on all the other ostensibly non-Marxist items you mentioned that Bon cares about—the environment, gender issues, gay rights, education, and yes, scores of other issues. Get on board already. We have a real chance to win, Bob has a relatively large audience; c’mon. None of that entails treating Marxism as a religion. It’s just about actually taking your ostensible commitments seriously in a moment where it matters.
I'm in for Bernie but should there be a Warren-Bernie ticket, I'll try to get over it.
I hope that there's an agreement between Warren and Bernie because if they keep competing through all the primaries, they will divide the left vote and give the nomination to Biden, which none of us want. So maybe they should wait to see who wins the first primaries and then the winner should endorse the other and campaign for him or her.
That there is an agreement between the two is especially important because Bernie is 78 and has a heart condition, which could get worse (I'm 73 and have some heart problems myself, for which I was recently hospitalized) and might not be able to face the grueling stress of a presidential campaign, although he could still be an excellent vice-president and close advisor to President Warren.
