If memory serves, Obamacare was one of the main issues, if not the main issue, that hobbled Obama’s presidency in the midterm elections of 2010 and 2014. And yet, this time around, the Democrats were able to achieve major victories by running primarily to protect Obamacare, which the GOP was unable to (completely) repeal. I guess that shows that sometimes people have to be dragged kicking and screaming.
I wonder, have we ever seen that kind of turnaround on an issue such as this?
Also, in looking to see how France’s private insurance market compares to Obamacare, I came across this interesting tidbit from a Huffpost article: “in France the average primary care physician’s salary was $95,892, compared with $186,582 in the U.S. This is nearly double for a physician providing the same services, yet physicians in France on average are required to complete more years in medical school while still remaining loyal to patients. The honor of being a physician in France is above and beyond that of entrepreneurial goals, as is clearly demonstrated with their acceptance of a sensible salary.”
Is it concievable that the medical profession in the US could sustain a halving of the average physician’s salary?

Bottom line: the US could emulate France in terms of access to treatment and services, but probably not at a similarly low cost.
