Todd Gitlin just sent me a screen shot of a page from a new
book by Shlomo Avineri about Marx. The
page concerns the complicated process by which Marx’s father, Heinrich, went
from being Heinrich Levi to being Heinrich Marx [it involves the law requiring
that lawyers in that place and time be Christians.] Avineri asks, “Would a theory called “Levism”
or later “Levism-Leninism” have the same appeal and resonance as “Marxism?”
Who knows? But it
occurred to me that if it were called Levism, a socialist uprising could be called a
Levitation.
